Description
The Coalport Inclined Plane, also known as The Hay Inclined Plane, was built in 1793 by William Reynolds. This structure connected the Shropshire Canal with a lower canal that ran through the China Works at Coalport to the River Severn. It features an incline that rises approximately 200 feet from the lower canal up the hillside to the disused upper canal. This inclined plane is the best preserved of the seven inclined planes in Shropshire and was last used in 1894. It underwent restoration in 1968 and 1975, with the rails being restored as well. At the upper end, there are remnants of a slipway and the brick shell of a building, possibly an engine house, which includes a chimney stack.
