Description
The canal milepost at Lock Number 37 on the Trent and Mersey Canal dates from around 1819. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that indicate the distances: "Shardlow 56 miles" and "Preston Brook 36 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon, located on Lichfield Street in Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal itself was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
