Description
Sutherland Works is a pottery works dating from around 1850, located on Normacot Road in Longton, Stoke on Trent. The building is primarily constructed of brick with tiled roofs, although part of it has been replaced with corrugated iron due to recent repairs following fire damage.
The main range of the works faces the street and is built in two phases. It features a left-hand range with seven bays and a lower entrance block with six bays on each side of a projecting central bay that has an arched entrance leading to the rear yard. Above this entrance is a Palladian-style triple window. The entrance arch is stuccoed and moulded, with a pot in a garland serving as the keystone. The ground floor windows are round-arched and have a continuous string course that forms hood moulds, while the upper windows have stilted arches. A corbel table runs along the eaves, topped by coping over the central gable. The left-hand range may be a later addition, but it shares similar detailing, including the stuccoed entrance archway on the right.
Within the courtyard, there are three bottle ovens situated in the rear ranges, all circular hovels with updraught ovens.
