Description
The Aynsley China Works (northern range) is a large pottery works complex located in Stoke on Trent, built in several phases during the second half of the 19th century. The structure is made of brick and features tiled roofs. It has a three-storey, long range to the southeast with prominent entrance blocks. One of these blocks has a blocked archway and Palladian style windows above, while the main entrance to the right is flanked by arched windows and has Palladian style windows above, all linked by a continuous hood mould to the adjacent windows. The connecting sections consist of 3, 5, and 7 bays with round-arched windows that feature a continuous sill band forming hood moulds.
To the northwest, the complex adjoins the former Sydney works, built in 1879. This ornate range combines gothic and classical styles and is also three-storeyed and symmetrical, with eight bays on each side of the projecting entrance block. This entrance block has a pedimented gable, flanked by full-height pilasters and topped with a fleche. It is decorated with terracotta bands and panelling, and is inscribed "Sydney Works, 1879". Although the arched entrance is now blocked, the archway remains, featuring an ornate keystone and vermiculated voussoirs. The windows in the flanking ranges have blue brick heads with stuccoed keystones and decorated stone sills.
