Description

The building at 55-57 Sheinton Street is primarily a late 15th-century rubble structure with a timber frame and a plaster superstructure, likely built in the early 16th century. It is two storeys high, featuring stone dressings on the sides and two moulded wooden mullioned and transomed eight-light windows on the upper floor. The lower floor is partially damaged but retains an original small, splayed window. There is a late 18th-century moulded wooden doorcase with a six-fielded-panelled door. A 16th-century chimney stack is located at the rear, featuring diagonal brick shafts. The east wall incorporates two arches dating to approximately 1300, believed to be remnants of an earlier monastic building. The property was formerly known as The Old Gaol.

This building is part of a group of properties numbered 50 to 59.
