Description

The Police Station, built in the mid-19th century, is a brick building with a gault brick plinth. It features quoins, brick bands, window surrounds, and a bracketted eaves cornice. The slate roof has two gables at the rear, each topped with cruciform stacks having overhanging cornices. The eaves are also bracketed, running around the gables. The front facade has two storeys and three windows, with paired pointed-arched windows on the first floor in the outer bays, over triple pointed-arched windows on the ground floor, and a single first-floor window in the centre. Continuous impost bands run across both floors. The central doorway is set within a pointed-arched surround and has a nail-studded door and overlight. A stone plaque above the doorway displays “POLICE STATION” in raised lettering. A wall to the right incorporates gault brick crenellations and a pointed-arch doorway that leads to a small exercise yard, extending around the sides. A small iron plaque to the right of the doorway reads “VR/PERSONS/THROWING/STONES/AT THE/TELEGRAPHS/WILL BE/ PROSECUTED”.
