Description
The Round House is an early 19th-century lodge located in Cheswardine. It is constructed from uncoursed and squared red sandstone, with some dressed stone, and features a slate roof supported by posts at each corner. The building has an octagonal plan and stands two storeys tall. To the right, there is an integral lateral brick stack. The first floor has three-light octagonal wooden casements on the front and to the left. On the ground floor, there are two-light wooden casements flanking a central door that has six flush panels, a plain surround, and a bracketed pent hood. It is likely that the first floor is a later addition, as indicated by the more regular masonry with dressings. The unusual roofing arrangement is probably also a later alteration. This lodge was formerly the south-east entrance to Ellerton Hall, which is not included in this listing.
