Description

The Pell Wall Old Lodge is an entrance lodge dating to approximately 1822–8, designed by Sir John Soane. It is located on Sandy Lane in Sutton Upon Tern, and was originally positioned to the south-west of Pell Wall Hall. The lodge is constructed of red brick with a hipped roof covered in graded slate tiles, with lead flat sections. It is a rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey building with three bays. The lodge features a plinth, brick pilaster strips, a recessed frieze band, and wide eaves. A prominent grey sandstone ashlar stack rises centrally, comprising two square shafts with recessed and tapered chimneypots. The front elevation has three bays with tripartite sash windows, stone cills, and wooden lintels. A formerly central doorway is now blocked and retains a wooden lintel. Tripartite sashes are also present to the returns. A 20th-century addition at the rear provides the current entrance. The interior of the lodge has not been inspected. It served as a back lodge to Pell Wall Hall.
