Description

The Old House, or Home Farmhouse, is a timber-framed building, likely dating from the mid-to-late 15th century, with a 17th-century addition. It was partly rebuilt or refaced in the late 18th or early 19th century, and further extended and altered at the rear in the late 19th century. The structure is timber-framed with painted brick nogging, with some areas rebuilt or refaced in red brick, painted to the front. Later extensions are also in red brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles.

The 17th-century framing features rectangular panels, running from the sole plate to the wall plate, with long straight tension braces. The original hall range consists of two framed bays, with a projecting gabled cross wing, also of two bays, which has been truncated. There is a one-storey and attic section with a two-storey cross wing and later additions to the east.

The west front features a large brick ridge stack in the centre. A large, partly-rebuilt dormer window with a crown-post truss and a segmental-headed two-light wooden casement is situated off-centre to the left. A segmental-headed two-light wooden casement is on the ground floor to the left, and a boarded door is centrally positioned. A catslide roof covers a one-storey lean-to in the angle to the right, with a dentil brick eaves cornice, a two-light window to the front, and a small window to the side. The cross wing has no windows on its front or side, and the truncated end has a tie-beam truss with raking struts. The return front to the right has four bays with segmental-headed boxed glazing bar sashes, except for a first-floor two-light wooden casement in the second bay from the left. A 20th-century half-glazed segmental-headed door is in the second bay from the left.

The rear of the building features two hipped bays to the left and a gabled range to the right.

Inside, the ground-floor room on the left has a heavily moulded cross-beamed ceiling with moulded joists. An old nail-studded door with three tall panels leads to a passageway. This passageway contains some 18th-century raised and fielded panelling, an old boarded door to the basement with old strap hinges, and a staircase with 18th-century turned balusters in a side window. The attic to the hall range retains old floorboards. A first-floor rear room contains a fireplace with a cable-fluted surround, believed to be a reused feature, and an early 18th-century door with four raised and fielded panels. A first-floor front room in the cross wing has a chamfered ceiling beam with ogee stops. Various 17th-century panelled doors are present throughout the house. This was the former home farmhouse to The Isle, located nearby.
