Description

Lower House is a farmhouse, now a house, that dates from the early to mid-18th century and incorporates elements from a 17th-century house, along with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick in random bond on a moulded stone plinth, featuring plastered stone angle quoins and an ashlar parapet, topped with plain tile roofs. The 18th-century facade presents a three-bay timber-framed house with two gabled ranges at right angles to the rear. The building is two and a half storeys tall with five bays, showcasing glazing bar sash windows (now horned) with gauged heads and raised plastered keystones, as well as moulded stone cills. The attic storey is illuminated by three glazing bar sashes and features a richly moulded cornice that marks the position of the former eaves, which is interrupted under the windows. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door, with the top panels glazed, and is sheltered by a canopied hood supported on scrolled cast-iron brackets. A prominent external stepped end stack is located to the left, and there is an integral end stack to the right. A Salop Fire Insurance Plate numbered 5335 is positioned above the central first-floor window. Inside, there is a staircase leading to the central hall, featuring elegant turned balusters that have been much repaired in the late 20th century. The right wall of the hall has 17th-century panelling, which is likely not in its original position, and the principal rafters and struts of the roof from the 17th-century house are exposed in the attic.
