Description
The gate piers, gates, and railings to Lower House were constructed in 1757, with the gates and railings likely added in the early to mid-19th century. The gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar and still show traces of paint. They are square in shape, topped with moulded capping and grooved ball finials, with the left pier inscribed "17" and the right pier inscribed "57". The wrought iron gates and railings that flank the path to Lower House feature a design of alternating straight and curved railings, adorned with spear-head finials and urn-capped standards. On either side of the gate piers, a yew hedge is trimmed to resemble an arcade, providing a screen that separates Lower House from the road.
