Description

The Memorial Drinking Fountain is a stone obelisk dated 1874, located in Shrewsbury on St Julian's Friars. It features stiff-leaf bands and is raised on a high square plinth with gablets above each projecting fountain basin, adorned with stiff-leaf and lotus flower panels. An inscription commemorates William James Clement, a surgeon, stating it was erected "by his friends and fellow townsmen in grateful recognition of his enlightened public spirit, consummate professional skill and active private benevolence." A bust of Clement is depicted in a medallion on the opposite face of the obelisk. Originally, this fountain was placed outside the station.
