Description

This former house, now used as a farm building, is located approximately 10 metres southwest of Lower Redgate in Llanfair Waterdine. It dates from the 14th or 15th century, with a likely late 16th-century inserted floor and stack, 18th or 19th-century refacing, and 20th-century alterations. The structure is timber framed and built using cruck construction, with later coursed sandstone rubble refacing and some parts rebuilt in 20th-century concrete block. The roof is made of corrugated iron.

Originally a hall house with three framed bays, it has one storey and an attic. The stack is off-centre to the right and truncated above the ridge, while a raking eaves-dormer is off-centre to the left. There are two ground floor windows to the left, and a boarded door in the centre with a damaged domed bread oven projecting to the right. To the right, there is later rebuilding that includes two boarded doors.

Inside, there are three pairs of full cruck trusses with smoke blackening, timber framed cross-walls with woven panels, and a probably late 16th-century inserted floor in the central bay featuring a chamfered beam and post. The inserted stack from the late 16th century has a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel. Despite its external appearance, this building is a notable example of a cruck-framed former hall house.
