Description
The bridge and watering place for cattle, located approximately 50 meters south of the Church of St Mary in Knockin, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from uncoursed red sandstone rubble with a thin coping. The bridge features a segmental arch that lacks keystones. To the south, there is a semicircular enclosure with walls about 1 meter high. The west branch of Weir Brook flows into the enclosure beneath the bridge and exits at the southern end through a segmental archway, which is infilled above the stream with a wooden open picket grille. There are entries to the watering place at both the east and west ends of the road parapet wall. Notably, there are approximately 8-centimeter diameter semicircular depressions in the parapet of the south wall, which are believed to have been caused by the friction of wire-bound hose pipes when steam engines were filled with water at this location.
