Description
The Conery is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, which was remodeled in the 18th or 19th century. It features a timber frame construction with stone and brick, finished with roughcast render. The roof is slate with gabled ends, and there are stacks at the gable end and rear lateral, with a later brick shaft on the south end.
The original layout likely consisted of a two-room plan with a through passage. The left room served as the hall, featuring a lateral stack at the back, while the right room may have originally been unheated but now has a gable end stack. The through passage has been blocked, the hall has been subdivided, and an outshut has been added to the north end. The front wall appears to have been rebuilt to create a deeper plan.
The exterior is one storey with an attic and has an asymmetrical west front. There is a large 16-pane sash window on the right, a smaller two-light casement under the eaves to the left of center, and a three-light casement on the ground floor to the left with glazing bars. A lean-to outshut is located at the left end, featuring a plank door and casements above. The rear has a large lateral stack on the right with a truncated shaft and lean-to ovens on either side, along with small two-light casements on the left. The south gable end includes a gabled porch with a semi-circular fanlight and a plank door.
Inside, the right room has chamfered axial beams, unchamfered joists, and a fireplace with a pilastered chimneypiece and a moulded shelf. The left room features a chamfered axial beam and chamfered joists with straight cut stops, along with a fireplace that has a 19th-century brick oven and copper. A jowled wall post in the north end wall supports what is claimed to be a sleeping platform, with wall framing and a large purlin exposed in the chamber.
