Description

A group of cottages dating around 1520, with significant alterations and extensions in the 18th and 19th centuries. They are built around the remains of a Franciscan friary. The cottages are primarily constructed from coursed and squared sandstone, with brick infill and some timber framing, and have a plain tiled roof. Numbers 23 to 25 form the main range and incorporate substantial elements from the earlier friary. This section is one-and-a-half storeys high and has a three-window facade. Perpendicular traceried windows have been altered to create doorways on either side of a central door with an overlight. Dormers are set into the roof above the upper windows. The rear elevation features 2- and 4-light Perpendicular traceried windows, with some original stone traceried windows retaining wood tracery within their splayed embrasures. Numbers 21 and 22 are part of a timber-framed gabled wing. Number 20 is a later addition, dating from around 1840, built in a simplified neo-Gothic style. It is two storeys high, with a two-window facade, a doorway to the left, and casement windows, all with steeply arched heads.
