Description
The former stable block, now serving as a gymnasium among other uses, was built around 1829-1832 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville in a Tudor Gothic style, with alterations made around 1920. Constructed from sandstone ashlar and topped with slate roofs, the building has an irregular pentagonal shape that surrounds a central courtyard, with the main entrance located on the south side.
The stable block features a plinth, buttresses, and coped parapeted gable ends adorned with obelisk finials, rising to one and a half stories. The south front includes two angled gabled wings with attic lancets and ground floor cross windows, separated by a screen wall approximately 2 meters high, which has chamfered coping and two square gatepiers.
The north front presents an irregular arrangement of seven windows. It has a central projecting gabled entrance with a narrow window at the apex, a four-light mullioned window on the first floor with a blank stone panel beneath, and two pairs of boarded doors set within four-centred archways. Flanking this entrance are two bays with gabled eaves dormers and ground floor cross windows; the right side features a later four-panelled door.
The outer projecting gabled wings include a right wing with a first-floor lancet and a ground floor six-light window, while the left wing has three-light mullioned windows on each floor, a four-centred boarded door to the right, and a right-hand return front with a ground floor boarded door and a gabled semi-dormer with a boarded loft door.
To the north, there is a walled entrance court approximately 2.5 meters high, featuring chamfered coping and two square gatepiers to the east topped with globe finials. A ballroom was constructed in the stable yard around 1920, which is now used as a gymnasium and has its entrance from the south, although it is not included in this listing.
