Description

Wootton Castle is a farmhouse, now a house, dating to the late 16th century, with substantial additions and alterations in later centuries. The building combines a two-bay hall range aligned east-west with a two-bay cross-wing extending at right angles to the south, further extended to the south by a single-bay addition built around 1900. The construction is timber-framed with uncoursed sandstone rubble and brick, largely covered with roughcast, and topped with slate roofs. The hall range has one storey and an attic, featuring late 20th-century casement windows to the front gable and two contemporary gabled eaves dormers. A half-glazed door sits beneath a casement on the left side, with a late 20th-century fixed-light casement below on the right. The former location of a gabled entrance porch is indicated between the door and casement and now contains a late 20th-century fixed-light casement. A small internal end stack sits to the right, and an axial ridge stack on the hall range has been reduced and rebuilt. Internally, the main ground-floor rooms exhibit chamfered ceiling beams, and the hall range has a massive stone stack with a rebuilt inglenook fireplace. Upstairs in the hall range, the central truss is of Queen-strut type. The former end wall of the cross-wing reveals close studding with a middle rail. Much of the original timber frame was plastered over during a survey in August 1985.
