Description

The gate, gate piers, and flanking walls are located approximately 78 metres to the south-west of the Church of Saint Bartholomew and date from the mid-18th century. The structure features a pair of painted ashlar piers, each with a moulded plinth, raised and fielded panels, a moulded cornice, and a large globe finial. The right-hand pier has a painted inscription that reads: "WAYFARERS/WELCOME/FROM AN/OPEN ROAD/TO AN/OPEN CHURCH".

There is a late 19th-century wrought-iron gate with dogbars, a dograil, and curved braces. The flanking walls are made of roughly dressed red and grey sandstone, each approximately 35 metres long and half a metre high, curving out towards square end piers topped with pyramidal caps. The coping is chamfered and has globe finials at intervals, although some finials were missing at the time of the survey in January 1986. The right-hand end pier includes a largely illegible inscribed stone, while the left-hand pier has a late 19th-century post box.

The walls contain fragments of dressed and carved medieval masonry, likely reused from the Church of Saint Bartholomew during its alterations and enlargement in the mid-18th century. It appears that the walls were constructed in two sections, with the shorter sections built first, followed by the straight lengths, as indicated by the straight joints.
