Description
Ludstone Hall is a remarkable Carolean manor house built by the Whitmore family around 1607. It is surrounded by a moat and features well-maintained formal gardens. The building has a square plan and is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The main facade showcases three curvilinear gables, with the central gable being recessed and featuring a round bay that rises two storeys, topped with a balustraded parapet. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed, with some retaining old lattice glazing. The attic gable windows are adorned with ornamental pediments that include swags and side scroll panels. The roof is tiled, and tall Tudor chimneys with coupled stacks add to its character. Inside, the hall boasts plaster strapwork ceilings, overmantels, and panelling that are largely original or well restored, along with an original staircase. The manor was significantly restored around 1870 and is approached by a short avenue of clipped yews.
