Description

Hordley House, originally built as a rectory around 1840 for Reverend John Walter Moore, is now a house. It features stuccoed red brick construction and a low-pitched hipped slate roof with a central open well. The building is two storeys high and has a stone floor band and a sandstone ashlar plinth. The façade consists of three bays, with the central section having a projecting pediment and glazing bar sash windows. The centre bay includes a hip-roofed porch with a segmental chamfered arch and an inner four-panel door, flanked by narrow segmental-headed windows in angled breaks. Ridge stacks are located to the left and right of the pediment, each with three attached and rebated shafts that have square openings at the top.

The right return has three bays with 15-paned glazing bar sashes that extend to the ground under a canopied verandah featuring a corrugated-iron roof supported by wooden latticework. The rear elevation mirrors the front, with a segmental-headed tripartite glazing bar sash in the centre and 15-paned sashes in the outer bays, all extending to the ground. Ridge stacks similar to those on the front are positioned on either side of the pediment. The left return has segmental-headed windows with leaded lights.

Attached to the left return are red brick outbuildings, including stables and a coach house, which are arranged around a cobbled courtyard and are likely slightly later than the house. These outbuildings are screened by a red brick wall with sandstone coping at the front. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have panelled window shutters.
