Description
The dovecote, located approximately 60 metres to the west of Lea Hall, dates from around 1584. It is constructed of red brick with blue brick diaper work and features a pyramidal stone slate roof. The dovecote has an octagonal plan and is set on a chamfered grey sandstone plinth, which has been restored in red sandstone. It includes a toothed-brick cornice at the raised eaves band and a small wooden glover with round-arched openings topped by a pyramidal lead cap and weathervane. On the east side, there is a small chamfered rectangular window and a small boarded door below, which has a red sandstone lintel. Inside, there are approximately 300 brick resting boxes built into the walls, with continuous brick ledges beneath them. A central wooden potence features braced horizontal spars at both the top and bottom, supporting a ladder at each end. Since Lea Hall is dated to 1584, it is likely that the dovecote was built around the same time.
