Description
The Church of St. Mary is a church built in 1844 by Edward Haycock of Shrewsbury. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a rendered east end and a shingle-hung west end, topped with a slate roof. The church is designed in the lancet style and consists of a three-bay nave, a polygonal apse, a north-west vestry, and a south-west porch.
Architectural details include buttresses with a single set-off, diagonal buttresses at the corners, a chamfered cill string, verge parapets, and a gabled west bellcote with a chamfered-arched opening. The windows are lancets with chamfered reveals, including three in the apse and twin lancets on the west side. The south doorway, located in the first bay from the left, features a chamfered arch and a late 19th-century boarded door. The gabled porch has a chamfered archway with a returned hoodmould. The north-west vestry includes a lancet window to the north and a lean-to to the west with a boarded north door.
Inside, the roof is supported by two pairs of purlins and features arch-braced tie-beam and collar trusses, which include queen struts with flanking curved braces and a short king post from the collar. Notable interior features include a chamfered-arched vestry door, an octagonal wooden pulpit, and an octagonal stone font with quatrefoil panels. There is also a reputed 17th-century chest in the vestry. The church is compared to the Church of St. John the Baptist on Church Road in Newcastle, which is also listed.
