Description

The barn and stable range at Faintree Hall Farm is a 17th-century barn accompanied by 18th-century stable ranges and an early 19th-century horse gin house. The barn features a weatherboarded timber frame, while the left stable range is constructed of coursed rubble stone with a timber-framed first floor, and the right stable range is also made of coursed rubble stone. The building has plain-tile roofs and is arranged in a U shape, with the barn positioned across the center and the stable ranges projecting to the rear on either end, while the gin house projects forward to the center left.

The barn consists of seven bays with heavy square panel framing and includes two threshing floors with opposing doorways. Inside, the partition walls have some brick infill, weatherboarding, and split wooden interlace panels. The roof features queen struts, double trenched purlins, clasped principals, and a ridge piece. The left stable range is two storeys high, with stable doors and windows beneath a hay loft, likely comprising six bays. The loft was full of hay at the time of the survey, but the gable end shows old double purlins. The right stable range also has stable doors and windows under cambered arches and is two storeys tall. Its interior includes a five-bay queen-post roof with double purlins, clasped principals, and one interrupted truss.

The gin house is circular with a low conical roof, supported by brick piers on a high stone plinth. Although the machinery has been removed, the interior retains its roof, featuring crossed beams, a carefully fashioned curving wall plate, and two tiers of curved purlins.
