Description
The barn and cowshed located approximately 30 meters west of Asterton Hall date from the early to mid 18th century and were altered and repaired in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in random bond with interrupted floor bands on the long sides, and it has a stone slate roof that has been repaired with Welsh slates and machine tiles.
On the west side, there are three irregularly spaced doors with cambered heads (one to the north is now blocked), along with one eaves hatch and ventilation shafts. The east side features six doors (one now blocked and two from the 19th century) and three eaves hatches.
Inside, the ground floor is floored over with 19th-century cowstalls. The roof is a Queen strut design with four bays and angle braces between the floor of the loft and the tie beams, with an additional bay to the north divided off by an inserted brick partition. There is also a contemporary timber-framed and weatherboarded barn at right angles to the southeast, which is linked by a 19th-century open shelter bay but was derelict at the time of the re-survey in June 1984 and is not included in this listing.
