Description
The Classical Temple, likely built in the late 18th century and possibly designed by James Wyatt, is located at Badger Dingle. This structure, which served as a summerhouse, is constructed of brick in English Garden Wall and random bond, with stucco and stone dressings. It has a square plan with apses running east to west and is a single storey with a basement below the external ground level. There are two vaulted cellars with round arched openings beneath the western apse and a single vaulted cellar to the east of the entrance on the south side. The western apse features two empty statue niches and a moulded eaves cornice. Currently, the temple is nearly in ruins; the roof has collapsed, and the four pillars of the former colonnade at the western apse have fallen and are now in fragments at the front. An 1837 map of the Badger Hall estate labels the temple as The Bird House. Badger Hall, which has since been demolished, was designed by Wyatt between 1779 and 1783.
