Description
The Smith memorial and railed enclosure, located immediately to the west of the Church of St Mary in Hopton Castle, dates from around 1840. The memorial is made of sandstone ashlar, while the flanking walls are constructed from regularly coursed and dressed rubble. It features wrought-iron railings with urn-capped standards that rest on low walls.
The central projection of the monument includes an oval inscription panel that commemorates William Smith, who died in 1840, and his wife, Ann, who died in 1824. This panel is flanked by slender, decorated vase-shaped balusters and topped with a semi-circular pediment that has decorated ball finials on either side, although the right finial was missing at the time of the last survey in August 1986. Additional inscriptions on the sides and below honor other members of the Smith family. The railed enclosure contains six stone grave slabs, which either mark the remains of those mentioned on the monument or other members of the Smith family.
