Description
No. 5, Hopton Castle, is an early 17th-century cottage with later additions and alterations. The structure is timber-framed with rendered and painted brick infill above a rubble stone plinth; the roof is corrugated iron and hipped to the right of a lower extension added to the right-hand side. The original two-cell layout was extended in the mid to late 17th century. The cottage has one storey and an attic. The timber framing consists of square panels, three from sill to wall-plate on the main part, and two large square panels on the two-bay addition. V-struts run from the collar to a prominent gabled half-dormer, which features a 19th-century cast-iron fixed light window to the left and a casement to the right. Two similar casements are present on the ground floor, alongside a boarded door to the far right. The addition has a 19th-century casement to the left and a 20th-century casement to the right. An integral roughcast end stack is situated immediately behind the ridge and directly above the entrance to the main part. The framing has been renewed to the left gable end. Interior inspection was not possible during a resurvey in August 1986, but the interior is likely to be of interest.
