Description

141-142 Tuck Hill is a pair of attached houses built around the mid 18th century, with extensions added in the mid and later 19th century. The houses are constructed of stone rubble with a painted front and brick extensions, topped with clay plain tile roofs featuring gabled ends. They have large gable-end stone stacks with weathered set-offs and later brick shafts.

The layout consists of a symmetrical pair of cottages, each with a kitchen that includes a large gable-end fireplace and a direct entry at the front, along with a pantry located centrally, one behind the other. In the mid 19th century, a two-storey outshut was added at the back, and a single-storey wing was constructed at the left end, which was used as a shop.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window east front. The 19th-century windows are two-light iron casements with glazing bars, and there is a small fixed-light pantry window in the centre of the ground floor. To the left and right of the centre are plank doors with lights inserted, and the ground floor openings feature cambered brick arches. The single-storey wing on the left has a plain three-light shop window and a plank door on the right. At the rear, there is a two-storey brick outshut with a lean-to tile roof and casement windows.

Inside, the principal room of each house, the kitchen, has a chamfered axial beam with run-out and straight-cut stops, along with large gable-end fireplaces that have cambered chamfered timber bressumers with cyma stops. Both kitchens include pantries with exposed unchamfered joists and have plank doors. The chambers are ceiled, and there is no access to the roof space.
