Description
The game larder and ice house, along with the courtyard walls and tower, are located to the west of Longner Hall. The walls and tower were built around 1803 by John Nash, while the game larder is likely from the mid-19th century. Designed in the Tudor Gothic style, the walls are made of red sandstone ashlar and red brick, extending approximately 40 meters in a curve from the southeast to the northwest, with the western section being taller. They feature a string course leading to a battlemented coping and a 4-centred chamfered-arched doorway on the south side, which has a studded boarded and panelled door.
The tower, integrated into the wall to the south, is constructed of rendered brick with ashlar dressings and has a square plan. It includes a string course leading to a battlemented parapet and narrow glazing bar sashes with 4-centred arched upper sections, Y-tracery, and chamfered reveals. There is one sash in each stage on the north side and one in the first stage on the south, along with a stone quatrefoil opening in the second stage to the south and a door on the west side.
The game larder and ice house are made of red brick and topped with a pyramidal plain tile roof. They have an octagonal plan and consist of one storey over a semi-basement. The structure features a high chamfered plinth, deep eaves, and an octagonal wooden cupola with louvred arched lights, as well as a moulded cornice leading to a battlemented parapet and an ogee lead dome. The square windows have paired arched lights and chamfered reveals. Access to the game larder is via 8 stone steps leading up to a 6 flush-panelled door on the north side, while the entrance to the ice house is in the basement next to the steps, featuring a depressed brick arch.
Inside the game larder, there are low shelves around the walls and a wrought iron hanging rack. Low ashlar walls connect the game larder to the tower to the south. A watercolour, likely by Nash and currently at Longner, depicts the Hall with the battlemented tower behind the former west conservatory.
