GV II

Game larder and ice house, courtyard walls, and tower. Walls and tower of circa 1803 by John Nash; probably mid-C19 game larder. Tudor Gothic style. Walls: red sandstone ashlar and red brick. Approximately 40 metres long, curving round from the south-east to the north-west; higher to west. String course to battlemented coping, 4-centred chamfered-arched doorway to south with studded boarded and panelled door. Tower in wall to south: rendered brick with ashlar dressings. Square plan. String to battlemented parapet. Narrow glazing bar sashes with 4-centred arched upper leaves, Y-tracery, and chamfered reveals, one in each stage to north and in first stage to south; stone quatrefoil opening in second stage to south, door to west. Game larder and ice house: red brick; pyramidal plain tile roof. Octagonal plan. One storey over semi-basement. High chamfered plinth, deep eaves; octagonal wooden cupola with louvred arched lights, moulded cornice to battlemented parapet and ogee lead dome. Square windows with paired arched lights and chamfered reveals; 8 stone steps up to 6 flush- panelled door at north; entrance to ice house in basement adjoining steps to right with depressed brick arch. Interior of game larder is complete with low shelves around walls and wrought iron hanging rack. Low ashlar walls link game larder with tower to south. A watercolour probably by Nash and now at Longner shows the Hall (q.v.) and the battlemented tower behind the former west conservatory.
