Description
Rowley Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse with a timber frame that is mostly covered by late 20th-century render, although evidence of close studding can still be seen on the external walls. It features a tile roof and a central brick chimney stack. The building has two storeys and an attic and was originally designed as an open hall with a cross range. The hall has had floors and partitions added, and one of the trusses in the roof space is visible, showcasing roll moulding and a concave chamfer, along with arched tie beams and chamfered wind braces. The chimney stack has replaced a louvre, as indicated by smoke-blackened rafters. The service end of the farmhouse includes a cellar with stone mullioned windows. Inside, one room in the cross range features a late 16th-century stone fireplace surround and mid-17th-century panelling with small fielded panels. Another room contains a richly decorated late 16th-century oak overmantel for the fireplace, which has two carved panels, each with a central carved escutcheon, separated by short carved pilasters, and framed with oak square panels and a dentil cornice.
