16/6 Remains of churchyard - cross approx. 215 metres to north-west of 28.10.60 The Flags (formerly listed as Ruins of old Church of Saint Mary, including remains of cross)

GV II

Churchyard cross, remains of. C15. Dressed red sandstone. Octagonal base consisting of 3 steps with socket for former shaft. The cross base stands to the south-west of the ruins of the former church of St. Mary (q.v.) which was abandoned and partly demolished in 1858. A photograph in the Shropshire Libraries collection shows the cross still with at least half of its shaft surviving. At the time of survey (December 1986) the cross base was overgrown and largely obscured. The Flags is not included on this list. D.H.S. Cranage, An architectural account of the churches of Shropshire, Shrewsbury churches, pp. 852-3; B.O.E. p.87; Shropshire Libraries, photographs collection.
