Description
The Trotting Horse Building is a Grade I listed house, which later became an inn, located in Barracks Passage, Shrewsbury. It dates back to the late 15th century and is currently unoccupied. The building is timber-framed and has been extensively restored, featuring a plain tiled roof. It was originally built as the rear range of premises on Wyle Cop (Nos 71-73 Wyle Cop).
The exterior of the building consists of three storeys with a slightly canted plan and five window ranges. The ground floor has timber-framing in square panels that have all been renewed, with close studding below a middle rail and square panels above on the first floor. The second storey also features square panels and a middle rail. Each storey jetties out, supported by brackets that carry the jetty. The ground floor has three doors flanked by two- and three-light casement windows, while the upper floors have renewed three- and four-light casement windows.
Inside, the building features a crown post roof with a variety of truss types and construction details across its six bays. The variations in truss types relate mainly to the bracing details: three trusses have arched braces to the tie beam and curved lateral bracing to the crown post, while one intermediate truss has raking queen struts and lacks a crown post. The roof includes trenched purlins in some areas, and the ridge piece is not continuous. The building also has jowled corner posts and some arched bracing in the long walls.
