Description

Besford Grange Farmhouse and attached railings is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations made to the rear in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick and has plain tile roofs, forming an L-shape over two storeys. It features a toothed and dentil brick eaves cornice, parapeted gable ends with moulded stone kneelers, and stone copings. There are external brick end stacks and the façade consists of three bays with glazing bar sashes that have gauged brick heads and painted stone lintels. The central door has eight raised and fielded panels, a lugged moulded architrave, a radial fanlight, and an open triangular-pedimented hood supported by scrolled brackets.

At the rear, there is a wing that has been reduced in length in the 20th century, which also has a parapeted gable end and an external brick lateral stack, along with a 20th-century lean-to in the angle. To the right, there is a brick wall with stone coping, and in front, low brick railings with stone coping feature plain railings, square-section standards with finials and stanchions, and square brick end piers topped with pyramidal stone caps.

Inside, the farmhouse has an 18th-century staircase that was altered in the late 20th century; it was originally a dog-leg design but is now a single flight with landings. The staircase has an open string, turned balusters (two per tread), a ramped moulded handrail, a curtail with a turned foot newel, and ramped wainscot panelling. There is a radial fanlight over the passage next to the staircase, and the left-hand ground-floor room features a dentil cornice. The doors throughout the house have six raised and fielded panels with moulded architraves.
