Description

Preston Farmhouse is a timber-framed farmhouse dating to the mid-17th and late 17th centuries, with an addition from the mid- to late 18th century. It is constructed with timber framing, painted brick nogging, and a partly chamfered dressed grey sandstone plinth; the rear is rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The 17th-century framing consists of square panels (3 from sole plate to wall plate) with short straight corner braces. The eaves were raised by approximately half a panel height, likely in the 18th century. The 18th-century addition has light square panels (4 from sole plate to wall plate) with long straight tension braces. The farmhouse has an L-plan layout, comprising three main framed bays and an 18th-century rear wing. There is a large brick ridge stack and an integral brick end stack. The windows on the first floor have 2- and 3-light wooden-framed metal casements, and a small horizontal sliding sash to the right. The ground floor features a mid- to late 19th-century three-light wooden mullioned and transomed casement, with weathering off-centre to the left, and paired 19th-century wooden cross windows with weathering to the right. A six-panelled door is located to the left, with two lower flush panels and four upper glazed panels, and a two-part rectangular overlight. Gable ends display exposed collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts. The 18th-century rear wing has glazing bar sashes and 19th-century wooden casements; its gable end features collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts. A 19th-century one-storey painted brick outshut is located in the angle at the rear. The interior was not inspected.
