Description
Old Hall Farmhouse, originally Holbrook Farmhouse, is a 17th-century farmhouse with later additions and alterations. The main structure is timber-framed with red brick infill, brick cladding, and has a graded slate roof. It follows a three-unit baffle-entry plan, with eaves slightly raised.
The timber framing is in square panels to the front, though partly obscured by 19th-century brick cladding; the end trusses are of queen-strut design. There are late 19th and early 20th-century casement windows: three directly below the eaves and three to the ground floor, with two to the left and one to the right of a 19th-century boarded door with a cambered head, located to the right of centre. An infilled doorway to the left of the present door is surmounted by a ridge stack, formerly part of the baffle entry. An external end stack is on the left, and an internal stack on the right. A 19th-century cast-iron pump is attached to the far right.
The interior retains fragments of the timber frame, including chamfered ceiling beams and exposed joists on the ground floor. Original plank doors and inset panelled wall cupboards are fitted with a variety of H-, L-, and cocks' head hinges. The fireplaces have 19th-century cast-iron grates, and the main range features a queen-strut roof. There are two-storey gabled red brick additions dating to the early 19th century, one at right-angles to the rear on the left and another mid-19th century on the right, connected by a 19th-century red brick lean-to dairy.
