Description
The Burton memorial, located approximately 20 metres to the south-west of Longner Hall, is a chest tomb dating from the mid-16th century, likely restored in the early 19th century. It is constructed from grey sandstone ashlar and features a cyma recta moulded plinth, frieze, and flat top.
On the north side, there is a painted inscription that reads: "HERE LYETH THE BODY/OF/EDWARD BURTON ESQ/WHO DIED ANNO DOMINI 1558". The frieze around the tomb contains additional painted inscriptions: on the north, it states, "Was it for denying Christ or some notorious fact/That this mans body Christian Burial lack't?"; on the west, "Oh no! not so his faithful true profession/was the chill cause which then was held transgression/When popery here did reign, the see of Rome/Would not admit to any such a tomb"; on the south, "Within her Idol temple walls; but be/Truely professing Christianity"; and on the east, "Was like Christ Jesus in a Garden laid,/Where he shall rest in peace till it be said,/Come faithful servant come receive with me/A just reward for thine integrity".
There are painted shields on the frieze to the east and west. The painted inscriptions may date from or have been restored in the early 19th century. Edward Burton of Longner was denied burial at St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury, the parish to which Longner belonged at that time.
