Description
This is an L-shaped range of farm buildings located immediately to the north of Chirbury Hall. The buildings date from the late 17th century and were remodeled in the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The main range features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a high uncoursed limestone rubble plinth, topped with a slate roof. The west range was originally timber framed on a high plinth but has been rebuilt in uncoursed limestone rubble and now has an asbestos sheet roof. The layout is L-shaped, with a horse engine house attached to the west range.
The main range consists of two levels and includes eaves hatches with 20th-century centre-hung windows on the ground floor. There is a wide cart entrance located in the third bay from the left. The west range also has two levels, featuring three eaves hatches and stable doors alternating with 20th-century windows on the ground floor. The horse engine house at the rear is made of red brick in English garden wall bond and has double doors on the north side.
Inside the main range, the framing is visible, with rectangular panels above a high cill. There are lofts to the left and right of the cart entrance, with 19th-century cowstalls below on the left side. The roof structure consists of collar and tie beams with single purlins and curved windbraces. The west range has some fragmentary rectangular panels on the original back wall and a continuous loft. Its roof spans seven bays and features a mix of king-post and queen-post trusses.
Attached at right angles to the south of the east end of the main range is a 19th-century granary, which has been altered in the 20th century and is not of special architectural interest. This building is included for its group value with Chirbury Hall.
