Description

The former HSBC and Midland Bank building, constructed around 1905, is located on the west side of Bull Ring in Ludlow. It is built from ashlar sandstone, with timber-frame and plaster elements, and features a stone-slate roof with three gables at the front and an ashlar end stack. The building is a single storey with an attic, and the entrance is situated to the center left. It has battened plank oak double doors set in a shallow stone arch, which is adorned with a moulded architrave and a keystone displaying the dates 1863 and 1905. Above the entrance, there are enriched wood lintels.

To the left of the entrance, there is a four-light window with moulded wood mullions and a clerestory, featuring leaded glazed upper lights with figures, all resting on an ashlar plinth beneath an enriched lintel. To the right, there is an 18-light mullion and transom bay window, also with leaded upper lights with figures, situated under a jettied gable that has an enriched bressummer supported by angled figureheads and pillars. The gable is topped with pierced bargeboards and a finial.

On the left side, there are two gables containing two-light and four-light mullion windows with leaded lights and cusped heads, along with enriched bargeboards and pendants. The left return side is made of ashlar and features a 20th-century wing, while the rear is constructed of painted brick. The building reflects the architectural style of the Feathers Hotel located opposite and is included for its group value.
