Description
This barn, located approximately 30 meters northeast of Upper Sweeney Farmhouse, dates from the early to mid-17th century and has undergone later alterations. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on an uncoursed limestone and conglomerate rubble plinth, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The framing consists of square panels, with three extending from the high cill to the wall-plate, and long straight tension braces. The south side is weatherboarded, while the north side has short horizontal plank infill. The left gable end includes three vertical struts connecting the tie beam to the collar, along with V-struts from the collar, which is similar to the right gable of Upper Sweeney Farmhouse. The right gable end has a similar arrangement, but its lower part is obscured by a later rubblestone addition, which is not included in the listing.
The barn features double doors, which were formerly used for threshing, in the second bay from the west, along with two eaves hatches on the south side (currently blocked) and 20th-century double doors on the north side. A door on the far left of the north side provides access to the space beneath the floor. Inside, the barn has a staggered double-purlin roof divided into four bays, with raking struts from the tie beams supporting the principal rafters. Timber-framed partitions with long straight tension braces rest on dwarf stone walls.
