Description

Town Walls are a medieval defensive structure, dating to the 13th century. Constructed of coursed and squared sandstone, they largely function as a retaining wall, rising to a parapet with raking coping at the top. A plaque is incorporated into the wall, inscribed with the words "This part of ye wall was repaired A.D. 1740. Edward Twiss esq. mayor. Mr Samuel Elisha and Mr Arthur Downes, Coroners," indicating repairs undertaken in 1740.
