Description

Bridge No. 33, also known as Hassel's Lift-up Bridge No. 1, is a canal lift bridge built around 1804. It was engineered by William Jessop and Thomas Telford. This bascule bridge features a braced wooden frame that supports a pair of pivoted wooden beams. These beams are connected by chains to the bridge deck at one end and are counterweighted at the other end. The Ellesmere Canal Company merged with the Chester Canal Company in 1813, and this bridge became part of the Shropshire Union Canal in 1846.
