Description
The domestic chapel, located approximately 110 meters south of Aston Hall, is now in ruins. It was built in 1742 and underwent late 19th-century alterations. The chapel was commissioned by Thomas Lloyd and is constructed of red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings, originally featuring a plain tile roof. The structure consists of a nave and chancel combined, along with a west tower and a north porch added in 1887.
The tower is designed in three stages, featuring square corner pilasters, a moulded cornice, a parapet, and urn finials at the corners. It has four round-headed windows with Y-tracery in the belfry and circular windows with four projecting keystones on the second stage, located on the west and south sides, as well as on the first stage on the north and south. The round-arched west doorway is detailed with raised keystones, imposts, and a panelled door.
The nave and chancel are divided into four bays, also featuring square corner pilasters and a moulded eaves cornice. The round-arched windows have Gibbs surrounds and late 19th-century Gothic tracery added. The north porch, located in the third bay from the west, has a 18th-century pedimented doorway that was moved from its original position.
Interior access was not possible during the last survey in July 1985, but it was noted to contain 19th-century stained glass and what appear to be original fittings. This chapel replaced an earlier one built in 1594, of which no traces remain.
