Description

The Church Barn adjacent to the Old Vicarage is a barn built in the late 17th century, with extensions made in the late 18th or early 19th century and further alterations in the mid-20th century. It features a timber frame that is weatherboarded on the side facing the road, with uncoursed local rubblestone additions at each end, all covered by a slate roof. At the rear, there is a full-length lean-to made of red brick with a shallow-pitched slate roof. The original structure had three equal timber-framed bays, and the later additions created the current five-bay layout. The west elevation facing the road has seven small six-paned windows located just below the eaves, along with a large 20th-century window at the north gable end.

Inside, the original square panel timber framing, consisting of three panels from the sole-plate to the wall-plate, is well-preserved on the long west wall. However, much of the framing on the east wall has been removed to provide access to the adjoining lean-to, although the wall-posts and straight braces connecting the wall-posts to the tie beams remain intact. The framing is also missing below the tie beam level at the original gable ends due to the addition of the stone bays. Most of the infill in the timber frame on the west wall, which is clad in weatherboarding on the outside, is made of mid-20th-century rat-trap stretcher bond, but four woven panels typical of south Shropshire and the Welsh borders can still be seen at the ends of this wall below the eaves.
