Description
Chilton Grove is a house dated 1740, with the south-east front remodeled around 1830-1840. It is constructed of red brick, with the front cement-rendered to resemble ashlar, and features a plain tile roof. The house has an irregular L-plan and is refaced in Greek Revival style, rising to two and three storeys. It includes a plinth, a moulded cornice, and a coped parapet, along with verge parapets and integral brick end stacks. The façade is arranged in a 1:5:1 bay pattern, with slightly projecting end pavilions topped by triangular pediments. The windows are glazing bar sashes, with four panes on the ground floor. There is a pair of central half-glazed doors framed by a moulded architrave, leading to a porch supported by pairs of unfluted Doric columns and an entablature. The house features 18th-century lead downpipes with moulded rainwater heads. The left-hand gable displays a rectangular datestone reading "J/WM/1740". At the rear, there are two projecting gabled wings at right angles, with a stack located in the valley between them. The interior is largely from the 1830-1840 period, featuring a three-light square-well stone staircase with stick balusters, a panelled ground-floor north-east room, and panelled doors and shutters throughout.
