T Shaped Outbuilding Approximately 10 Metres East Of Swiss Cottage

This T-shaped outbuilding, located approximately 10 meters east of Swiss Cottage, dates from around 1826 to 1842 and was built for Charles Kynaston Mainwaring, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick, featuring rusticated sandstone ashlar on the tower and rear, and has lean-to slate roofs with fishscale bands on the pyramidal roof of the tower. The building is single storey and has a corbelled eaves cornice on the tower.

The left range includes a segmental-headed cast-iron window at the front and a similar, narrower window in the projecting range, with a triangular pointed window on the right return. The right range has a late 19th-century casement window on the left, a 20th-century casement window in the center, and a boarded door on the right, with a stone stack in the roof slope towards the center.

The tower, which projects to the rear, features a doorway with a shouldered lintel and a latticed oriel window above, also with a shouldered lintel. There is a triangular pointed doorway on the first floor to the right. The pyramidal roof is adorned with gabled lucarnes and a pointed finial.

Charles Kynaston Mainwaring was an enthusiastic amateur gardener who traveled extensively in Europe. He is believed to have designed much of the garden at Oteley and its features. His house, Oteley Park, built in an Elizabethan style on the site of an earlier structure between 1826 and 1830 and extended in 1842, was demolished around 1960.
