Description
This former font, now a monument, is located approximately 15 metres southwest of the Church of Saint Leonard. It dates from 1636 and is made of dressed grey sandstone featuring herringbone tooling. The font originally had an octagonal shape, with a tapered stem and a square base, topped by a panelled tapered bowl. It likely has an early 19th-century pyramidal stone cap with a polyhedral finial. A late 19th-century or early 20th-century square brick pedestal supports it. The bowl is inscribed with the words: "The gift of William Lawton 1636". An entry in the Mucklestone register from 1636 notes the baptism of John Lawton, the son of William Lawton and Elizabeth, stating it was the first baptism in the new font or baptistry given to the Chapel of Woore by William Lawton. The font was probably moved from the old chapel when the current building was constructed in 1830-1831.
