Description
This is a house, originally built around 1600, and later divided into two properties. It was likely altered in the early 20th century. The house is timber-framed with painted brick infill, and the eaves were raised using brick designed to look like timber framing; the roof is covered in asbestos slate. The timber framing consists of large square panels, two from the sole plate to the wall plate, with short, straight corner braces. A section of the front wall was rebuilt in the 18th century using smaller timber pieces and a long, straight tension brace. The building follows a baffle-entry plan, with four framed bays. It is two stories high. A brick stack is located just behind the ridge, and another integral brick stack is set into the front corner on the left, both dating to the early 20th century. There are four first-floor windows with two lights each, likely from the early 20th century, and three ground-floor windows with two lights each, dating to the 19th century. A 20th-century glazed door is situated roughly in the center, slightly to the left of the stack, with a matching gabled porch. Another half-glazed door, also with a gabled porch, is on the right. A single-story addition was built at the rear in the 20th century. Inside, there is a chamfered spine beam and a large open fireplace in a ground-floor room located to the left of the central stack. There is at least one surviving 17th-century roof truss, although others may be hidden. Historical records suggest that this building was rented by the Tyler family in the 16th or early 17th centuries and then by the Pierce family for the remainder of the 17th century.
