Description
The stables adjoining Elton Hall to the north are a Grade II listed building, dating from the mid-18th century, with some alterations from the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The structure is part timber-framed with rendered infill and part handmade brick, featuring plain tiled roofs with gable-end parapets and kneelers. It has an H-plan layout, consisting of a central range of six framed bays aligned north to south, with two-bay cross-wings at each end. The building is mainly two levels high, with a three-course band between the levels at the front gable ends of the cross-wings.
The framing includes mainly two rows of panels at the upper level of the main range, with some large rectangular panels at the south end. On the west front elevation, there is a multi-paned square window at ground floor level of the main range, two narrow leaded rectangular lights at the upper level of the south gable end, and a door located in the angle of the north wing with the main part. A blocked diamond-shaped opening in the apex of the south gable is believed to have originally been a dovecote. The main entrances are located at the rear. There is a rear wing that adjoins the north cross-wing, and the east gable end of the south cross-wing has been connected to Elton Hall by a single-storey addition.
Inside, the roof has been partly rebuilt and features intermediate tie-beam trusses with two main convex struts and similar subsidiary struts in the lower angles.
