Description

Holly Tree Cottage is a house dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with rendered infill sitting on a rubble base, topped with plain tiled roofs. The cottage consists of two framed bays oriented roughly east to west, featuring a large external chimney with a rebuilt detached brick stack at the west end. This chimney is enclosed by a lean-to timber-framed service bay, which also includes the main entrance, creating a baffle-entry plan. The building is a single storey with an attic that has a rear dormer.

The main part of the cottage has three rows of square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and a collar and tie-beam roof truss is partly exposed at the west end. On the north front elevation, the main section has a ground floor 2-light window. To the east, there is a lean-to addition with a catslide roof, which features a 2-light 20th-century casement window on its north side and a ledged and battened door on its west side. The service bay contains a single-light 20th-century casement window and the main entrance, which has a ledged and battened door topped with a transom light that includes a central glazing bar. The rear south elevation has a 20th-century gabled dormer with a 2-light casement, as well as another lean-to addition with a catslide roof adjoining the east bay.
